How Expensive is SEO?

 There is no easy answer to this question. I can tell you what SEO will cost you today, but the reality is that SEO costs constantly change depending on your website’s niche and industry. Today, some businesses can afford it while others cannot, mostly depending on their monthly expenditures. It is possible to get free SEO but this isn’t an article about that.


I’ll start by giving some perspective on the costs of SEO so you understand your options more clearly. Then I’ll list some popular misconceptions about SEO, and discuss why people think these things are true. Finally, I will answer the question “how much do digital marketing agencies charge for their services?”

There are three major questions, should you hire an SEO agency, should you do it yourself or should you use a free service? I’ll answer each one of them in this article.

This article is primarily for smaller businesses and start-ups with limited budgets. For larger companies, the costs are higher but I will also mention some things that may be relevant to your situation as well.

What does SEO cost?

There are two main factors to consider when determining the costs of SEO in your business. The first one is how much budget you have at the end of every month. The second factor is what kind of results can you expect to get from your work. If you don’t know, I’ll try my best to explain it now.

The costs of SEO are directly related to the value you get out of it. For example, if your website ranks well but produces no revenue, then your investment is worthless. The two factors are interrelated because the more traffic you have, the more money you make from them through sales or other conversions. On average, a website with about 1.5 million monthly visitors (or M visits/month) in organic search can make around $100,000 in revenue per month.

Take note that the costs of SEO do not necessarily increase linearly with your earned revenue. Some clients may get very few results for their money because they did not choose the right keywords to target. Others may get great results but at a very high cost.

As you can see, the costs of SEO are driven by two factors: traffic and revenue per visitor (R). The lower your traffic is, the higher your R will be. This means that if you have more money to spend every month on SEO, you will probably make more money from your efforts.

On the other hand, if you have a limited budget then you need to choose keywords with low competition but high demand.
